Japan develops a two-foot robot with a speed of 4.2 km per hour

Recently, researchers at the University of Tokyo in Japan have developed a two-legged high-speed walking robot with a speed of 4.2 kilometers per hour.

The team used a high-speed camera and a high-efficiency drive to quickly detect the waist and leg movements of the robot with a high-speed camera of 600 frames per second. The high-speed drive drives the foot movements to maintain the dynamic balance during the run. The robot has a leg length of 14 cm and a weight of 800 g. For example, in the case of humans with a leg length of 70 cm, the high-speed walking speed of 4.2 km/h is equivalent to the speed of 20 km/h of human beings. The robot can also realize the air flipping action such as the tumbling.

It is understood that the biped robot research to date is mostly based on the ZMP (Zero Moment Point) theory. That is, the center of gravity of the body must fall within the range of the sole of the foot, and the robot can walk stably. The research results provide a new technical approach for the development of biped walking robots beyond human capabilities.
