US scientists use new technology to dramatically increase LED luminous efficiency and stability

According to the report of the physicist's organization on March 20th, scientists at North Carolina State University have recently developed a new technology that can significantly increase the brightness of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) without increasing power consumption. At the same time, with a special coating material, the new LED is more stable and adaptable than ordinary LED products. The relevant papers were published online in the famous international chemical journal Langmuir.

Stewart Wilkins, the first author of the paper, and Dr. Wilkins of North Carolina State University, said that they achieved this goal by coating a polar GaN semiconductor with a self-assembled phosphate-based coating.

Researchers first fabricated GaN using nitrogen and germanium through multilayer self-assembly techniques. Then, a phosphoric acid group containing an organophosphorus molecule was added and coated on the surface of the gallium nitride material. The use of gallium nitride semiconductors increases the luminous efficiency of LEDs, and phosphoric acid-based materials ensure the stability of gallium nitride, making it difficult to chemically react with substances in the environment and reducing its potential for dissolution in solution.

"Improving the stability of GaN is very important," said Wilkins. "Because this will create new conditions for the future of the new biomedical field. For example, implantable sensors."

It is understood that gallium nitride semiconductors can increase light output compared with silicon semiconductor LEDs commonly found on the market. If the same power consumption, the luminous flux of the silicon semiconductor LED can reach 1000 lumens, the luminous flux of the gallium nitride semiconductor LED can reach more than 2000 lumens. Therefore, LEDs based on gallium nitride semiconductors have higher luminous efficiency and are more energy-efficient. In addition, compared to silicon semiconductor LEDs, gallium nitride semiconductor LEDs are small, lightweight and easier to integrate. (Wang Xiaolong)
