India fears that solar energy industry is "dominated" by China

“China also poses a serious problem for India’s emerging solar equipment market.” On the 15th, a report in India’s “Financial Express” issued the above warning. According to the report, solar energy equipment suppliers such as Suntech, Trina Solar, Yingli, Jinke and Saiwei have focused on exploring the emerging Indian market. Since China's solar energy equipment is 25% to 30% lower than India's equipment prices, its active involvement will create a strong shock wave in India's domestic industry. The Financial Express is concerned that it is difficult for small Indian factories to respond to such fierce competition.

The report said that the Indian government plans to develop India into one of the countries with the highest solar power generation in the world. According to a report published by KPMG, India's solar energy industry is expected to attract 110 billion U.S. dollars in investment by 2022, create 1 million direct jobs, and reduce India’s coal import consumption by 5.5 billion U.S. dollars. Solar power generation will meet 7% of India's electricity demand.

Indian industry insiders believe that solar equipment manufacturers from China are quickly seizing the Indian market. In addition to its price advantage, Chinese products also provide credit services. At present, solar energy equipment manufacturers in India do not enjoy import tariff protection and the import tax is zero. According to Indian statistics, Chinese equipment manufacturers have occupied 65% of the global solar power equipment market. Although the Indian government provides subsidies for solar power generation, power plants still tend to use cheaper Chinese equipment, thus increasing the competitiveness of electricity prices.

In view of the above situation, Indian solar equipment manufacturers intend to form a coalition to deal with Chinese manufacturers. Sharma, the chief operating officer of India's Jubite Solar, said that at least 20 Indian solar equipment manufacturers plan to jointly establish industry associations to increase their voice. Sharma called on the Indian government to support the development of industries that are still rampant in the form of subsidies. An Indian industry official also warned that at the 2011 India Renewable Energy Expo held in New Delhi, Chinese manufacturers’ booths account for one-fifth. There are more than ten Chinese companies that generate more than 1,000 megawatts of electricity. Indian manufacturers can add The amount of power generated is less than 1,000 megawatts.

Some foreign solar equipment manufacturers that build factories in India also intend to seek protection against Chinese companies’ competition. Larry Hallberg, president of a Canadian solar equipment company that operates in India, said that if India wants to avoid the solar industry being dominated by China, it must establish a "fair competition platform." The Indian government must provide policy support for the development of local industries so that India is expected to become one of the major producers of solar energy equipment in the world in the next five years.
