The choice of zero-emission hydrogen fuel has great promise to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels-as long as we can find a production method that is cheap and does not require a lot of energy input. Now, scientists have found a way to efficiently produce hydrogen fuel using rust and light sources. The setup uses several basic elements-the light emitted by the mercury xenon lamp, water and methanol solution, and a special rust (or iron oxide) called α-FeOOH. In a new study, the researchers outlined how this method produces 25 times more hydrogen than existing technologies using titanium dioxide catalysts . One of the biggest challenges in hydrogen fuel production is to separate hydrogen atoms from other molecules and keep them in this state without causing an explosion. In the new method, through the exchange of titanium and rust, the generated hydrogen seems to be prevented from recombining with oxygen, making the separation of the elements easier, while reducing the risk of explosion. Flammability is one of the reasons why hydrogen fuel has not been popularized. The other is that the separation of hydrogen (from water, methane or other similar substances) usually consumes more energy. Ken-ichi Katsumata, a materials scientist at Tokyo University of Science in Japan, said: "We are very surprised to use this catalyst to produce hydrogen because most iron oxides do not have the ability to reduce hydrogen. "We then looked for the conditions to activate α-FeOOH and found that oxygen is an indispensable factor. This is the second surprise, because many studies have shown that oxygen capture inhibits hydrogen production by capturing excited electrons." Not only is this rust more common (and therefore cheaper) than other catalysts used to make hydrogen, but it also seems to be very stable-the researchers report that they were able to successfully conduct the experiment for an astonishing 400 hours. Considering that the source of hydrogen in this case is simple organic waste, this new method may have a huge impact on the energy system-using less resources to produce more hydrogen. Whether it is a car engine or a power plant, the only byproduct of hydrogen fuel is water. This is a revolutionary fuel source, and many scientists are working to use abundant resources such as water and sunlight to produce hydrogen. In recent years, we have successfully tested several catalysts, providing experts with many ways to explore, but it still takes time to obtain commercially meaningful catalysts. This latest study describes an important step forward, but before we can use hydrogen to power cars, more research is needed. Next, one of the areas the research team will study is why oxygen is so important in the production process (when oxygen is removed from the catalyst, the experiment fails). The research was published in "Chemistry-European Journal".
