Product modeling and rapid manufacturing based on digital image features (Figure)

Traditional product design and manufacturing generally begins with a stylist, sketches based on product requirements and ideas, or the designer reverses the original object through a plaster model based on the physical prototype, and continually modifies the prototype design and then structures. The engineer determines the structural design of the product, produces prototypes of different proportions according to the needs of the consumer market, and finally manufactures the molds so that the products can be mass-produced.

However, in many cases, there is no physical model, no product drawings, and only digital pictures, which may be the source of the original design of the product, or may contain important features of the product design. In this case, if the product can be modeled according to the digital picture information, or even the corresponding mold is developed, it will be a simple and effective solution for the original design and manufacture of the product. In this paper, we first introduce a digital image-based product CAD design method. In the virtual computer environment (the design environment used in this article is Pro/Engine 3D modeling software), the product is three-dimensionally shaped to make the data image two-dimensional. Feature generation 3D model with key design information, and then input the model data into the rapid prototyping machine, can quickly prototype the product for design evaluation or market research, and can also be post-processed for single product After directly becoming the final product. Rapid prototyping can be made in combination with other manufacturing processes to make different types of quick molds for mass production. In this paper, SLA rapid prototyping and silicone rubber molding process are used to quickly manufacture silicone rubber molds, which can be used for small batch manufacturing of vacuum injection products.

1 Rapid product modeling based on digital image features and Pro/Engineer environment

In the Internet or photo gallery, and even digital photos taken by myself, there is often some information that will inspire the product design or the inspiration of the manufacturer, and apply some of the features to the product. However, digital images are two-dimensional, and product models are often three-dimensional. If two-dimensional planar features are used in three-dimensional product modeling, the required features need to be extracted and modified in 3D CAD according to design requirements. In the design, this process is done through CAD design software. Pro/Engineer software is used in this article. PRO/Engine is a product of PTC Company of the United States. It has powerful functions such as solid modeling, assembly and engineering analysis. It has many modules and is especially suitable for 3D design of various products. Widely used in electronics, communications, machinery, molds, industrial design, automotive, aerospace, home appliances, toys and other industries, especially in the mold design and manufacturing industry, has widely used its powerful modeling functions, accurate and complete expression and description Complex surfaces and solid shapes of the mold. In this paper, the software is used to extract key features of the image and its 3D model generation.

Introduce the process of product modeling with an image example, as shown in Figure 1. The shape of the dragon in the picture is very distinctive, and I want to make desktop crafts based on the shape of this dragon. First, you need to extract the dragon's characteristic curve in the picture and modify it. Then generate a 3D model, and finally add some features to complete the product design.


It can be seen from Figure 1 that the product shape is complex, has an irregular shape, and its surface is mostly curved. It is very difficult to use the general stretching and rotation commands. If you make those surfaces under ISDX, you can achieve the desired effect relatively easily.
