Technology frontier: Greener Honda's new low-pollution diesel engine

For a long time, Japanese automakers have invested less in the development of diesel engines than some European automakers. However, with the gradual rise of the diesel market, Japanese car manufacturers have gradually paid more attention to this field. In this context, Honda announced the completion of the next generation of diesel engine research and development, the most important feature is that this diesel engine can have the same level of exhaust emissions as the gasoline engine. The diesel engine developed by Honda uses a revolutionary NOx converter to allow nitrogen oxide emissions to meet US Environmental Protection Agency's five-phase emissions standards. This revolutionary catalytic converter is also the world's first chemical reaction using ammonia to convert toxic nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen.
The new catalytic converter has a two-layer structure. The first layer absorbs nitrogen oxides and converts one part into ammonia. The other layer absorbs the converted ammonia and then chemically reacts with the remaining nitrogen oxides. Finally, harmless nitrogen is produced. This new technology has enabled Honda to produce such a clean, lightweight NOx treatment system with an optimum operating temperature of 200 ° C to 300 ° C, which is the main temperature range for diesel engine exhaust.
Honda is currently installing the system on the 2.2-liter, i-CTDi engine, which has been on the European Accord since 2003. The engine was originally quietly running, and it was known for its clean emissions. Now, with this catalyst conversion system, it not only does not detract from the original performance, but also makes the exhaust emissions cleaner.
With the release of this new technology, Honda intends to change its diesel engine into this clean diesel engine and promote it to other markets. It is estimated that after three years, a new generation of diesel engines equipped with this technology will enter the US market.
A catalytic converter, typically used on gasoline engines, has a three-way converter that reduces nitrogen oxides by about 1%.
However, the catalytic converter used on the gasoline engine has strict requirements on the oil-air mixture ratio and must be operated in a specific environment. For diesel engines filled with oxygen in a combustion environment, it is not suitable, and can only reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 10%. The catalytic converter developed by Honda will effectively reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions of diesel engines to near the level of gasoline engines. In addition, there are advantages such as good installation and light weight, and I believe that it can be popularized in a short time in the future.
