Scientists have discovered a new type of magnet that may improve data storage technology

A team of physicists from New York University discovered a brand-new magnet, which is different from any other magnets known. It is called "singlet magnet". Scientists have discovered this type of magnet in the uranium and antimony compound USb2, because it can quickly and easily change between the magnetized and non-magnetized states, so it is possible to improve the computer's data storage capacity.

In a typical magnet, when electrons (which usually have their own magnetic field pointing in random directions) are aligned, a magnetic force is generated, forming a single strong magnetic field. Scientists have discovered that the electrons in USb2 can produce "spin excitons", or special particles, that when they stick together can temporarily form and generate an aligned magnetic field, the singlet magnetic field.

With their research recently published in the journal Nature Communications, physicists have demonstrated that singlet magnets can exist in stable environments outside of the experimental environment. Scientists have previously observed this singlet magnetic field in the rapid flash of the experimental environment.

New York University principal researcher Andrew Wray said that there are many studies using magnets and magnetism to improve data storage technology. Singlet magnets should have a more sudden transition between magnetic and non-magnetic. You don't need to do too much work to switch the material between non-magnetic and ferromagnetic states, which may be beneficial to the power consumption and storage switching speed of the computer.
